How to Include your Pet in Thanksgiving (Safely and Lovingly)

November 13, 20252 min read

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, love, and family — and for most of us, that family includes a furry friend (or two). Naturally, we want them to be part of the celebration.
But between the festive food, decorations, and guests, Thanksgiving can turn into a stressful — or even dangerous — day for pets.

So how can we make them feel included without putting their safety at risk?
Here are 5 simple ways to help your pet enjoy a safe, happy, and tail-wagging Thanksgiving.

🍗 1. Share the Feast (the Safe Way)

We know — it’s hard to resist those puppy eyes during dinner. But many Thanksgiving foods are unsafe for pets, including turkey bones, gravy, onions, and desserts.

Do this instead:
Prepare a small pet-friendly plate. Offer plain, cooked turkey breast (no skin, no seasoning) or simple veggies like carrots, green beans, or sweet potato.
You can even find Thanksgiving treats made specifically for dogs and cats — a safe and tasty way to celebrate together.

🏡 2. Create a “VIP” Zone for Your Pet

Thanksgiving gatherings can be loud and overwhelming. Give your pet a cozy, quiet corner with their bed, water, and favorite toy — away from the noise, smells, and busy feet.

If your pet tends to get anxious with visitors, play some calm background music or offer a chew toy to help them relax. Remember: peace of mind is the best gift you can give them that day.

🚪 3. Keep Doors (and Eyes) Open

With guests coming and going, it’s easy for a pet to slip out unnoticed.
Remind your visitors to close doors behind them and not let your furry friend wander outside unsupervised.

If your pet gets overwhelmed by crowds, it’s perfectly okay to let them stay in another room during the meal — they’ll thank you later!

🌾 4. Let Them Join the Fun

After the meal, instead of falling into a food coma, take your pet out for a post-dinner walk or playtime in the yard.
This helps with digestion and gives both of you a chance to reconnect after the busy day.

You can even create a mini Thanksgiving tradition — like taking a “family paw-trait” each year with your pets dressed in fall colors.

🎀 5. Watch Out for Decorations and Leftovers

Festive candles, ribbons, and shiny centerpieces may look adorable, but they can be tempting (and dangerous) chew toys.
Keep decor out of reach and secure trash bins to avoid accidental snacking.

Also, make sure leftover turkey bones, chocolate desserts, and alcohol are kept far from curious noses.

💛 Gratitude Is Better with Paws

This Thanksgiving, let’s celebrate love in all its forms — human and furry alike.
When we protect our pets, we’re not just keeping them safe; we’re showing them how thankful we truly are for their loyalty, joy, and unconditional love.

Because gratitude is best shared with those who wag their tails beside us. 🐾🧡
